A Teacher Aide's role in support independent learning

“Tell me and I’ll forget.

Teach me and I’ll remember.

Involve me and I learn”

~ Benjamin Franklin

A Teacher’s Aide role is wide and varied, but one of their vital impacts is to enrich the classroom experience – both for the teacher and the students. A UK-based independent charity, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) works to raise standards in challenging schools in the UK. They released a report that discusses the positive impact teacher’s aides (known as Teacher’s Assistants in the UK), have on the classroom and on student achievement.

One of the seven recommendations made refer to the importance of Teacher’s Aides in encouraging and developing independent learning in every student.

 What is Independent Learning?

Independent learning is when a student has the ability to think, act and undertake their studies autonomously. It is a crucial skill for children to learn and master. It is also a key area in which Teacher’s Aides can encourage and support children to strive towards.

Independent learning is about students taking ownership of their learning. By doing so, they will gain confidence within themselves and their learning abilities. Consequently, they will feel more comfortable in striving forward and challenging their own learning.

How Can Teacher’s Aides Encourage Independent Learning?

A Teacher’s Aide can work closely with children whilst still empowering them to take ownership of their learning. They can use specific skills to empower students as opposed to spoon-feeding them answers and providing over-guidance in their learning.

• Use open-ended questions as opposed to ‘yes/no’ answers

• Ask lots of questions to ensure comprehension of topics

• Avoid over-prompting

• Encourage students to take risks in their learning

• Encourage confidence

• Start with a ‘less help is more’ approach

One of the greatest gifts a Teacher’s Aide can give to children is the ability to open and access their full learning potential. An effective Teacher’s Aide will instil in children that they have the ability to learn and flourish on their own accord. They will encourage students to take risks yet know that they are there for assistance when needed.
